Calogero Caruana

Azienda Agricola Calogero Caruana is the work of Calogero Caruana, one of the rising vignerons redefining Sicilian wine, embodying the passion and fire of a new generation of natural winemakers. After many years of study and work in Tuscany under the guidance of Stefano Amerighi, Calogero returned to his birthplace in western Sicily to begin his own winery. His time away had instilled in him a renewed awareness of farming and winemaking, with full respect for natural and biological rhythms.
The domaine sits above the Torre Salsa Nature Reserve in the province of Agrigento, less than two kilometers from the sea, so the sun and coastal breeze impart a fresh profile to the fruit. About 5-6 hectares, the farm includes both vineyards and olive groves on sandy, limestone-rich soil.
Calogero cultivates the vines using guyot, bush, and candelabro training systems (the latter advantageous in drought-prone regions). All grape varieties are indigenous: Inzolia (Ansonica), Grillo, Catarratto, Nero d’Avola, and Nero Cappuccio.
Calogero practices organic farming, and his philosophy of winemaking is guided by minimal intervention and deep respect for the land. Fermentation is always spontaneous, driven by native yeasts, and his work in the cellar is essential but restrained, allowing the wines to develop according to their nature. Aging methods combine ancient traditions with thoughtful modernity, including full cask fermentation, flor maturation, and extended skin maceration.
